Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to challenge specific decisions from the official, echoing the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
