Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
