No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
