Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
